Choosing a Domain Name...
Things to consider when deciding on your domain name
Choose your domain name that represents your business name, your services, or both.
Are you Doctor Miller DDS? Then perhaps Millerdentistry.com would work for you. Ava's Antique Emporium? Avasantiques.com would work well. The key here is that it is easy to remember, and incorporates keywords that will be used in your site.
Try to avoid using hyphens in your domain name.
Registering a name such as Allen-SmithEnterprises.com might seem like a good idea but in reality it can be a problem. When people visit a site and then tell their friends about it they are prone to say "Allen Smith Enterprises dot com". The hyphen is not verbalized and your potential visitor ends up at "allensmithenterpises.com" without the hyphen! Look for alternatives such as ASEnterprises.com or AllenandSmith.com.
Dotcom is still the best extension.
While many domain extensions are now available, dotcom has been burned into the brains of Internet users since day one. Right or wrong, in the minds of many consumers, domain names ending in .com seem more legitimate then extensions such as .biz, .tv, etc.
Be sure your name does not infringe on a trademark.
Trademark laws that apply to hard copy also apply to uses on the Internet. You may want to take the time to use the Trademark Electronic Search System located on the USPTO web site to be sure your name does not infringe on any trademarks.
Create a list of potential domain names.
Nothing is worse then choosing a domain name, then finding it taken when you go to register it. However the odds are that this may happen as millions and millions have been registered. Be prepared, create a list of several domain names that work for your project and rank them in order of preference. That way if you strike out the first time, you are already prepared to keep on moving ahead.
Put some serious thought into choosing your domain name. It is a vital component of making your website a successful one!
